legend of mayon volcano



                     LEGEND OF MAYON VOLCANO

The story of The Legend of Mayon Volcano is a tragic story. Because it shows that the two lovers were separated. But even though they were away from each other, they did not give up and they fought for their love until the end of their lives.

A girl named Daragang Magayon had many suitors from different tribes, one of them is Pagtuga, but Daragang Magayon did not love Pagtuga. She had given her heart to Panganoron, the one who saved her from death in the river. After saving her life, Panganoron started to court her, and after some days she finally accepted his proposal, and so Panganoron decided to ask Darang Magayon's father, Rajah Makusog for her hand in matrimony. The father accepted him.  When Pagtuga heard of the news he got very angry, so he decided to kidnapped Rajah Makusog and took him to the mountains, then he told everyone that he would release him if Darang Magamon would marry him. Afraid that Pagtuga would hurt her father, she accepted to be his wife. When Panganon knew about the situation, he asked to his warriors to follow him to the mountains to fight against Panganoron, Panganoron killed Pagtuga, but later he was killed by an arrow thrown by one of Pagtuga's warriors. Sadly another arrow pierced Darang Magayon when she was running to the arms of his love, killing her. After the battle was over, Rajah Makusog dug a grave and laid the bodies of both lovers in it. As days passed by, people who went to the grave to pay respect, saw that the grave was rising, turning into a land form and they started to call it Mayon. While some says that the eruptions on the Mayon volcano, are the sings of the love between the lovers. Other says that the spirit of Darang Magayon lives on the volcano, and the spirit of Panganoron lives on the clouds above, and all year long disperse rain to keep the flowers and plants fresh, so it stays beautiful.

The Legend of Mount Mayon has become a part of the life of the people living in Daraga, Albay mainly because the mountain itself plays a big part in their beliefs, practices, culture and celebrations. The Magayon Festival was celebrated in commemoration of this legend. Because of the rich oral tradition of telling stories the there came different versions of the legends where they tackle a tragic love story of a beautiful damsel and a brave warrior. These legends were believed to be the reason of the mounting of the beautiful volcano.

Known as "the perfect cone". Mount Mayon has the symmetric conical shape that attracts people near and far to witness its beauty. Mayon can be found on the province of Albay on the Bicol Region of the Philippines. The villagers noticed that the grave of the lovers had risen after few weeks. The grave continuously rise. Up and up, it went higher, shape as a cone.
It was so pretty and looks like a perfect cone. And because of the beautiful daughter of their ruler, Magayon, the villagers started calling the beauty, Mayon. It was now known as the Mount Mayon in the province of Albay.

The Legend of Mayon Volcano is a story of love and death. It shows that they are willing to sacrifice their lives for love. Although they did not ended up together, they are still together in the afterlife.
